about

In the spring of 2018 while Telestrion was in the studio finishing up Blazing In The Sky, Don Tart (Producer/Engineer/Mixer for Plaster) brought me a hard drive with all of the original multitracks from the Long Way From Earth album sessions. This gave me the opportunity to take another shot at the mix, taking a fresh approach, and stripping it down of some of the excessive overdubs, trying to capture more of the live trio vibe, while also tweaking the vocals and getting them closer to how I wanted them to sound. Being that none of us had much studio experience at that point, we should have just let Don do his thing with the mix, rather than us trying to direct and influence it, and though Don did a great job, he was rushed, and after two attempts at the mix, we pretty much just had to go with it, even though no one was completely happy with the results. Also, due to some miscommuniation with the mastering engineer, and again, having no experience with that sort of thing, we ended up with some unfortunate crossfading that definitely didn't turn out as originally envisioned.

I thouroughly enjoyed diving back into the original multitracks now, with 20 years of recording experience, the benefit of hindsight, and unlimited time to work on the tracks in my home studio. I am pleased with how the new mix turned out, and find the album to be a far more enjoyable listen now. A bit of polish really helped highlight the original performances, which were exciting and full of energy. Some fades were left up for some interesting endings that have never been heard. Also, the two jams that made up the "Hidden Track Secret Jam" are here completely intact and unedited, along with Sympathy Generator which was recorded, but not inlcuded on the album at the time.

Unfortunately, the guitar tracks for Tomorrow's Yesterday didn't survive the digital transfer from the original ADAT tapes, so it is not a part of the new version of the album. Although the mix is completely new, all of the tracks are exactly as they were originally recorded in 1998.

Also included in this collection is the original mix, in the new running order, with all of the tracks completely separate from each other, as well as the original four track demos recorded at Dwayne's house in the fall of 1997, and a bonus track of some entertaining studio chatter from the master tapes.
